What is the name of the Japanese man who created stunning arts using Microsoft Excel?

While most digital artists opt to use Photoshop or other similar digital imaging software, 77-year-old Japanese artist Tatsuo Horiuchi chooses to work with Microsoft Excel to produce his beautiful works of art. His “paintings” are remarkably intricate works that mimic traditional Japanese paintings that offer scenic views of natural landscapes rich with cultural motifs.

The artist says, “I never used Excel at work but I saw other people making pretty graphs and thought, ‘I could probably draw with that.’” He adds, “Graphics software is expensive but Excel comes pre-installed in most computers… And it has more functions and is easier to use than [Microsoft] Paint.”

Horiuchi even dabbled with Microsoft Word, but found it to be too restrictive in its paper sizing. There is far more freedom for the artist to expand on his pieces in Excel. Since his discovery of the program’s artistic functions and his ability to utilize the software’s capabilities, Horiuchi has gone on to win competitions with his work, most notably taking first prize at the Excel Autoshape Art Contest in 2006.

Having gained worldwide praise over the last few years, Horiuchi has now caught the attention of Great Big Story. The artist invited GBS into his home, offering a behind-the-scenes look at his process. It’s hard to believe that these lifelike illustrations were made on Excel spreadsheets, which are typically used to crunch numbers.

Which are the some popular instant messages?

Instant Messengers (IMS) have been an integral part of the lives of children who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. Before WhatsApp revolutionised the world of chatting, there was Yahoo Messenger and Gchat. IM lets users have conversations with people around the world through real-time tot transmission over the Internet.

While it started with just text, over the years service providers began offering different features such as sharing of files and emoticons. As the quality of the Internet improved, many service providers added audio and video calls to their features.

Today, however, the rise of messaging apps such as Whatsapp and WeChat due to availability of Internet on smartphones, has led to the decline of chat messengers. Though few remain today, the nostalgia of using chat messengers remains with users who were introduced to computers in the 1990s and early 2000s. Let’s look at some popular IMs of the past, and some that remain popular even today.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)

One of the leading chat messengers used in North America, AIM was one of the oldest IM services, which was launched in 1997. The messenger was used widely in India as well.

AIM offered features such as messaging to mobile numbers and real-time IM that let you see what someone was typing in real-time. AIM was shut down in December 2017.

Yahoo! Messenger

One of the most popular chat messenger services in India, the Yahoo! Messenger was launched in 1998. It provided free of charge communication services and could be used only if you had a Yahoo! email ID. Most users on Yahoo! used its chatroom feature, which let users chat with others sharing common interests. Yahoo! Messenger closed its doors in July 2018.

Skype

Specialising in one-to-one and group video calls, Skype is a popular messenger platform which was launched in 2003. The messenger service also allows users to dial mobile numbers around the world. It was acquired by Microsoft.

MSN Messenger

MSN Messenger was launched by Microsoft in 1999 and was later rebranded as Windows Live Messenger. While it initially offered services to users with a hotmail ID, it later worked with Yahoo! Messenger and Skype to allow users to chat across the two platforms. The messenger service was discontinued in 2013.

Gchat

Gchat now known as Google Hangouts, was launched in 2005. It allowed Google users to chat with each other. It is integrated with Gmail, meaning users could use it within the Gmail environment, and is available as a standalone messenger too. Over the years, Gchat became Google Hangouts and supported features such as audio and video calling and file sharing. Today, it also offers group video calls.

Like USB, HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface, is a port available on your laptop. Using a HDMI cable, you can connect your television or projector to your laptop. You can even connect a DVD or Blue Ray player to the television or laptop. As the name suggests, the output of a video or picture displayed using the HDMI port is completely in high definition (HD).

Wireless Connectivity

Wi-Fi is a common term today. Wi-Fi doesn’t just let you connect to the Internet wirelessly, it also lets you connect devices to your laptop or computer to allow for data transfer. Apps like SHAREit use your Wi-Fi to connect your smartphone and computer, and transfer data. Alternatively, if you have a smart TV, connecting your television and laptop/ smartphone to the same wireless network also lets you cast whatever you see on your laptop/ smartphone to the TV.

Bluetooth

You would have heard of the word Bluetooth being mentioned in relation to your phone. But did you know your laptop also has Bluetooth connectivity? Yes, this feature lets you connect your laptop with your phone or any other Bluetooth device, like a speaker and share data or listen to music.

Aux Cable

Short for Auxiliary this port is the place where you plug in your headphones or earphones. Used mainly for audio transfer, you can also connect a speaker or a cars audio system to the laptop using the aux cable. Most devices with a 3.5mm jack can be inserted and connected to the laptop using the aux port.

What is the role of codes in communication?

What are codes?

Well behind one simple action that you want the computer to perform are pages and pages of codes that instruct the computer to perform the necessary action and give the desired output. These codes are sets of instructions given to the computer to perform an action, and the process of writing codes in programming language – the language the computer understands – is known as coding.

When you browse the web or use any software, what you see on the screen is in the language you understand, but what is written for the computer is different. For example, visit any page in the web and right click and select view page source. What you see are codes written in a programming language which instructs the computer to display what you see on screen. There are even codes that tell the computer to accept a particular action from a user, like opening a new link.

Individuals who write these codes in a programming language they are comfortable with are called coders, developers or programmers.

How to code?

Coding is done using programming languages such as Java, CSS and HTML The computer does not understand anything beyond the binary digits 1 and 0. If you had to communicate directly with the computer, you would have to talk in 1s and Os. However, since this is a massive task for humans to process, programming languages were introduced to bridge the gap.

A programming language lets you write the code in a language you can understand and translates it for the computer. There are two types of programming languages high-level and low-level.

A low-level programming language is closer to the binary code that a computer understands, while a high-level language is closer to what humans understand. High-level languages are designed to be easy-to-write codes. Most programming languages available in the market today are high-level languages.

What is podcast?

A podcast is a digital audio or video file that a user can download or stream and listen to. It is like an on demand internet radio where you can listen to anything you want whenever you want Usually, a podcast is an episodic series, but an individual file can also be called a podcast. The word podcast was suggested by British journalist and technologist Ben Hammersley in 2004.

Podcasts can be accessed through several mediums such as Ipods, desktop computers and smartphones. The first podcast commonly believed to have been published online is the Matt Schichter Interviews in October 2003.

Which are the best games that are quick-to-play and easily accessible through Google search?

Atari Breakout

The original Breakout game was released by Atari, a gaming company, in 1976. It was hugely popular and a fun game to play. Before, you could go to Google Images and type ‘Atari Breakout and the game would appear. But now, you need to type out ‘Atari Breakout in the Google Search bar and dick on A feeling lucky Once you do so, the game will pop up on your screen.

Playing the game is simple – There are several bricks laid out on the top of the screen and you need to break them all using a ball. Whenever the ball hits a brick, the brick breaks and the ball starts descending towards the lower half of the screen. The challenge lies in bouncing the ball right back up using the paddle that you can control with the arrow keys or the mouse. The goal is to destroy all the bricks. You do get several turns to do so, but you need to be quick and attentive to win the game.

Snake

Remember the classic snake game that was available on most basic mobile phones and hand-held video games? You can now play the game using Google search with colourful visuals and sounds. All you need to do is to type Play Snake in the search bar and the game will appear on screen. For those of you who haven’t played the game yet here are the rules: You are given a grid, which is the play space. And an apple appears anywhere on the grid. You play the role of the snake who needs to devour the apple. You can control the directions of the snake using the arrow keys. Once it devours the apple, another one appears in some other part of the board. As the snake keeps eating apples, it grows bigger in length, making it difficult for you to control it. This cycle continues as long as the player loses. You lose the game of the snake hit against the sides of the play area or if it hits against itself.

The game also lets you customize and play to your liking. You can make the snake move faster or slower, and choose a different fruit as well.

Doodle Cricket

Over the years, Google has brought out some innovative and interactive Google Doodles. One such doodle was for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. This doodle has featured subsequently for other cricketing events as well.

To access the game, just go to the Google doodle archives and type cricket in the search bar. Alternatively. You can type Google Cricket and the link will appear. The gameplay is simple – You, the batsman, are a grasshopper, and the snails (the computer) are the opponent team. Since the commencement of the lockdown, there has been an increase in the number of channels on video hosting sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. Videos posted on these channels are called ‘vlogs’. A vlog is a portmanteau of “video” and “blog”. It is a form of blog where the medium of sharing views is video, instead of text.

Usually, a vlog means to take a video of yourself speaking about some topic and posting it on your blog. But today, with the rise in video hosting sites, the term has expanded to include any kind of videos hosted on such sites, with or without text.

The first computers to work in the same way as today’s were developed in the 1940s. These huge machines used thousands of thermionic valves. Computers became far smaller with the introduction of integrated circuits in the 1950s, and have continued to become more powerful.

Desktop computers used at home, school and work are called personal computers (PCs). Other types include mainframes, used by large companies for data processing, and supercomputers, for doing complex scientific calculations extremely quickly.

The central processing unit of a PC is contained on a single large integrated circuit called a microprocessor. It has two units – one that carries out calculations and other operations, and another that receives instructions and data from memory.

Parts of a PC

A computer is made up of hardware, its physical parts, and software, made up of the data and programs it stores and uses. The hardware is made up of the computer itself and peripherals, such as monitors and printers that attach to it.

The main part of a personal computer is the central processing unit (CPU), normally simply called the processor, which can be thought of as the computer’s “brain”. It receives instructions from the program and carries them out. Programs and data are stored in the computer’s memory. Rows of metal tracks called buses connect the processor and memory. The data bus carries the data; the address bus tells the memory where the data should come from or go to.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

There are two main types of computer software – system software and application software. System software does the computer’s “housekeeping” jobs, such as controlling a printer, or writing data to disc drives. Application software makes the computer do specific jobs.

Most personal computers have application software such as a word processor (for preparing letters and reports), a database (for storing and retrieving information), a web browser (for surfing the World Wide Web) and e-mail software. Games and educational programs are also applications. Office computers may also have software for doing calculations (called spreadsheets), for processing orders, for accounts, for planning projects and for making presentations. Book and magazine designers use publishing software to design and edit pages before they are printed. Engineers and designers use computer-aided design (CAD) software to help them design new products, which they can view on-screen before making the real thing. Details of the parts can be sent to computers that control the manufacturing machines that make the parts.

In most offices, computers are linked together into networks so that they can share programs and data, which are stored on a computer called a server.

Many computers do just one specific job. Examples of these dedicated computers are games machines, in-car navigation computers, and the computers that help to fly airliners and fighter aircraft.

How to take care of your laptops and desktops?

With laptops and desktops working overtime during this pandemic, it becomes necessary to take care of our gadgets to ensure their longevity. When the laptop or desktop is new, we take extra care of it. But as time passes, we tend to ignore basic things such as shutting down the gadget. Now that you are spending more hours at home, invest time in caring for your gadgets and making the best use of them.

Remember to shut down the system

This is the most important rule to follow. Always turn off the system after each use. Don’t let it run for days together, as it can heat up and affect the battery life. Like your body need rest, your system needs it as well.

Update the OS

It might be time consuming, but allow your gadget to update the operating system, whenever necessary, if you are doing something important, then schedule the updates for sometime later when you are relatively free. But remember to update the OS, as this can improve your system’s performance and also ehance its security.

No eating while using the system

Most of us munch on something or eat our food while using the system. This must be avoided at all costs. Crumbs falling on the keyboard, between the keys, can damage its internal parts. It is the same with water or any other liquid.

Pull the plug

Another thing we are all guilty is overcharging our devices. While certain devices come with audio cut-off where they automatically stop charging once optional charge is reached, most devices do not have the same. Avoid overcharging your laptop, as it can heat up the battery and affect is longevity.

Keep system away from heat

Do not expose your system to direct heat or high temperatures because this can damage its parts and most often lead to a thermal shutdowns. If possible, invest in a cooling fan for a laptop if the temperature where you live is usually high.

Clean the system

Periodically clean the system to get rid if all the dust and dirt. While doing so, please remember to use a clean, dry cloth. Moisture of any kind will harm the system.

Install an antivirus

Install a good antivirus that protects your data from viruses. Set your antivirus to run a scan periodically to make sure you track any virus before it does damage.

What is netiquette?

Netiquette is a combination of the words ‘Internet’ and ‘Etiquette’. It refers to the rules to be observed online. This applies to several aspects of the Internet such as email, social media, online chat, web comments, communication during gaming, and web forums among others. There is no official list of such rules. Hence, they can vary from community to community. However, there are certain rules that are followed uniformly by a majority of communities. These include.

Respect others’ privacy

Do not share others’ pictures, personal details or videos that they are not comfortable publishing online. Respect their right to privacy.

Watch your tongue

Do not let your personal problem with someone spill onto the virtual space. Try to amicably sort out issues instead of posting inflammatory or offensive comments. If you come across anyone indulging in it, report their profile immediately.

Think before you post

Whether it is an email or a post on social media, think twice before publishing it online. Your posts should not target anyone and should not hurt their sentiments. Remember that we are a culturally diverse world. So, be welcoming of people instead of posting things against a person or a community.

Think before reposting

So your friend has posted something about an issue and is requesting people to repost the same to spread the word. Like a good friend you might want to repost it, but don’t. It is the era of fake news and fake information in the virtual world. So, check the facts before you decide to repost anything that is spreading online.

Be a sport

When you play multiplayer games online with friends or stranger, do not say anything inflammatory. Similarly, if you lose a game, be a sport and accept your loss gracefully. So not indulge in profanity.

No ALL CAPS, please

This is an accepted behaviour almost everywhere – you do not use ALL CAPS in a mail, chat comments or any other form of communication online. When you use all caps, it is considered that you are shouting or yelling at the person at the other end.

Don’t spam others

Do not repeatedly send mails or chat messages to people if they are not responding on time, wait it out. Similarly, refrain from forwarding unnecessary WhatsApp messages. It is impolite to spam people in any way.

To use the computer to its optimal potential, we need to install various software that let us perform different tasks such as word processing, accessing the Internet, and watching videos. The Operating System, which helps users interact with the computer, is also a software.

While some software come pre-installed with a laptop or desktop, some are expensive, making them inaccessible.

What is software piracy?

In simple terms, software piracy is the illegal copying, use or distribution of a software. Most software, except open source ones, is copyrighted. When you buy a software, you become a licensed user of the software comes with it’s own terms and conditions of usage. When these are breached, and you start using the software for your own profit by illegally circulating it, you indulge in software piracy.

Types of software piracy

Software piracy is practiced in different ways. Some of these are:

Softlifting: Also called softloading, this is the most common type of software piracy. Softlifting means sharing a program with someone who is not licensed to use it. For example, if you share your licensed Microsoft Office Software CD with your friend when it mentions it is licensed for only one computer, you are involving in softlifting.

Counterfeiting: Another common type of piracy, this involves creating duplicates of the original software and selling them for profit.

Online/Internet Piracy: One of the fastest growing forms of piracy, this involves copying of a software and putting up the file on the Internet for download. There are many sites that let you download pirated versions of software. Be aware, as much as the person who uploads the software online, the person who downloads it is equally guilty when it comes to piracy.

Hard disk loading: This is usually committed by hardware dealers who load an unauthorized copy of a software on the system and sell it to the end user.

OEM unbundling: In this form of piracy, one usually sells a stand-alone software from a bundle of software. For example, Adobe suite is a bundled software. If someone sells you just Adobe Photoshop from it, it is known as OEM unbundling.

What are the skills to become a coder?

A new research from the University of Washington in Seattle, the U.S., revealed that one need not necessarily excel in Maths to be a coder. According to the research, a natural aptitude for learning languages is a stronger predictor of learning to programme than basic math knowledge. This is because writing code also involves learning a second language and the ability to learn that language’s grammar and vocabulary.

The study had examined the neurocognitive abilities of more than 30 adults as they learned a programming language called Python. Following a series of tests that assessed their executive function, language, and math skills, participants also complete a series of online lessons and quizzes in Python.

Those who managed to learn the programming language faster and with greater accuracy tended to have a mix of strong problem-solving skills as well as language abilities, stated the findings published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Maths has always been considered one of the most important skills when it comes to coding. However, this new study states while mathematical skills are important, there are other skills, apart from the aptitude to learn a new language, which are equally important.

If you wish to become a coder, here are a few skills you should develop:

Problem-solving: One of the most important soft skills required to be a programmer is problem-solving because a programmer’s key role is to solve a problem. If the boss wants to know what the users are reading through in the site, the programmer needs to solve the problem by writing a code that instructs the computer to track user clicks.

Logical reasoning: The computer is a logical machine. If a+b=c, the computer will follow that logic. Hence, a programmer too needs to work on his logical reasoning skills to understand the workings of the computer and provide step-by-step logical instructions.

Good memory: ‘Practice makes perfect’ is a popular saying. But before you are close to perfecting your programming knowledge, you need to work on your memory skills. This is because programming involves the use of several keywords for specific tasks which need to be remembered.

Basic math: You don’t need to be an expert in math. But basic math, especially arithmetic and algebra, is a must since programs need to perform calculations at different points in time.

Communication skills: A programmer needs to be an effective communicator. Apart from being attentive and listening to the brief a client gives him or her, a programmer needs to effectively communicate what can or cannot be done when it comes to coding.

A keen eye for detail: Programming languages involve the use of several keywords and special characters. If one character is missing, then the whole program can crash. Hence, a programmer needs to have a keen eye for detail.

Who invented the cut-copy-paste command in computer?

Today, if you find doing assignments on the computer easy, you have to thank Larry Tesler. Wondering why? For it was he who invented the cut-copy-paste command. Does it ring a bell? Be it students, teachers or working professionals, you could probably count the number of people in the world who wouldn’t have used the cut-copy-paste command. Actually, you might not find anyone at all because that’s how essential this command has become in today’s computing.

Who was Larry Tesler?

Born in Bronx, New York, in 1945, Larry Tesler was a computer scientist. Having graduated from the Stanford University, California, Tesler started working for the Silicon Valley in the early 1960s – a time when the computer was still inaccessible to a majority of people. He specialized in user interface design and worked for a number of firms during his lifetime, such as Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre (Parc), where he started his career, and Apple. Post Apple, he set up an education start-up and worked with Amazon and Yahoo for brief periods.

Tesler believed in making the computer accessible to people. He wanted to simplify its use to make it easier for people to operate it.

During his time at Parc, Tesler, along with his colleague Tim Mott, devised the cut-copy-paste command. The idea for the same was inspired by the old method of editing, where people would physically cut portions of printed text and glue them elsewhere. Tesler also came up with the find & replace command during his time at Parc.

The cut-copy-paste command was first incorporated into Apple’s software on the Lisa computer in 1983. After this, computers have only become more and more user friendly.

Tesler passed away on February 20, 2020. He was 74.

What do we thank him for?

Cut, copy and paste. These commands are an indispensable part of our lives today. Instead of typing out chunks of text, one could use these commands to complete the process in a fraction of time.

In Windows computers, to cut text, you can highlight the text using mouse and right click and select Cut. Alternatively, you could use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+X.

For copying text, you would follow the same process and choose Copy instead from the list or use the shortcut Ctrl+C.

For pasting text, select Paste from the menu, or use the shortcut Ctrl+V to paste the text in the place you want.

Remember, when you Cut and Paste text, the text will no longer remain in its original place. Whereas, if you Copy and Paste text, you are creating a copy of the text, meaning the original remains intact.

What is a chatbot?

A chatbot, or chatterbot, is a computer program designed to stimulate conversation with humans. A chatbot usually has textual conversations with users, guiding them through simple processes. Sometimes, it is hard to identify who you are chatting with – a human or a robot. Many websites today use chatbots.

The term chatterbot was originally coined by computer scientist Michael Mauldin in 1994. Mauldin is the creator of Verbot, a popular chatterbot program.

The first conversational bot, however, was written in the U.S. in 1966. Implemented by Joseph Weizenbaum, a computer scientist of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the chatbot was called Eliza. The chatbot was so authentic that it misled many people it was human.

Advantages of a chatbot

Chatbots are a great help for businesses, helping improve customer service and personalizing communication. However, for a user, a chatbot can be a boon when it comes to getting immediate responses for queries. Most chatbots are operational 24×7, meaning you can ask it a question even at two in the morning and you will be served a response. A chatbot also comes in handy when you don’t have the patience to read through the Frequently Asked Questions. Most chatbots are equipped with answering the FAQs.

Chatbots are also linked to human customer service professionals. If it cannot answer your query any further, it will put you through to a professional, thereby ensuring seamless customer service.

How do chatbots work?

Depending on the purpose they are designed for, chatbots can be divided into two groups – simple, and trained/smart.

Simple chatbots work according to pre-programmed commands.

Usually, a developer writes a list of keywords and command for the computer program to look for and execute. When a user chats with such a bot, if the keyword is present, the bot will execute the command. If not, it might say something like “Sorry, I do not understand”.

A smart chatbot, on the other hand, relies on artificial intelligence to communicate with users. Instead of pre-programmed answers, this bot will offer you a list of suggestions based on what you key in. The smart bot also stores all the words and sentences you use for later processing to improve on its responses.

Chatbots and the Turing test

While chatbots are highly intelligent, they haven’t passed the Turing test as of 2019. The Turing test, developed in the 1950s by Alan Turing, is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligence equivalent to or indistinguishable from humans. Simply put, a human judge has a conversation with a human and a chatbot. If he can identify the machine, the chatbot doesn’t pass the Turing test.

What are the features of computers running on Windows 10?

A secret start menu

Over the years, many of us became accustomed to the simple textual start menu offered by the Windows OS. But with Windows 10, a new tiled interface emerged, confusing many new users. Well, you might not find the exact start menu that you did in the older versions of Windows, but right click on the Windows icon and you will find a more textual interface.

Shake off the windows

With the Windows+D keyboard shortcut you can minimise all the windows on the screen. But what if you want the window you are currently working on to be open and everything else to be minimised? Shake it!

Yes, clicking on the title bar of the window you are working on, you shake it. All the other windows will get minimised. If you want the windows to comes back, just shake the current window again.

For the lazy typists

For those of you who are lay to type your messages, Windows 10 has a special dictation mode. Press and hold the Windows+H keyboard keys and a dictation mode will open. Once you enable it in your settings, Windows will use your in-built microphone to record what you are saying. This feature can be used for typing out emails or word documents.

Organising windows

This feature was available in Windows 7 too. Especially useful when referencing something, you can keep two windows open simultaneously o the screen, next to each other. To do this, you can click on the title bar of a window and drag it to whichever side of the screen you want it to occupy. Once you do this, you will be shown a list of other running windows, one of which you can open on the other side of the screen. This feature can also be accessed by pressing Windows+ (any of the arrow keys) based on the place you want the windows to occupy.

WHAT IS A PIXEL?

A Pixel is a tiny dot of color, which, together with millions of other dots, makes up a picture on a computer or television screen. It is short for “picture element”. A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image or graphic that can be displayed and represented on a digital display device.

A pixel is the basic logical unit in digital graphics. Pixels are combined to form a complete image, video, text or any visible thing on a computer display. A pixel is also known as a picture element.

A pixel is represented by a dot or square on a computer monitor display screen. Pixels are the basic building blocks of a digital image or display and are created using geometric coordinates. Depending on the graphics card and display monitor, the quantity, size and color combination of pixels varies and is measured in terms of the display resolution.

For example, a computer with a display resolution of 1280 x 768 will produce a maximum of 98,3040 pixels on a display screen. Each pixel has a unique logical address, a size of eight bits or more and, in most high-end display devices, the ability to project millions of different colors.

The pixel resolution spread also determines the quality of display; more pixels per inch of monitor screen yields better image results.

 

WHAT IS INSIDE THE PROCESSING UNIT OF A COMPUTER?

Inside the processing unit of a computer are collections of integrated circuits (microchips) and other components, usually positioned on circuit boards. There are also slots for floppy disks and CDs to be inserted, a “hard disk” on which data is stored, and perhaps devices such as fans to keep the components cool. Portable computers also have space for a battery, which can be recharged.

It is imperative to understand the name and function of each component in a computer in order to understand how it functions as a whole. Attempt to always remember that a computer is based off the human body and functions in the same way. You cannot expect to understand the human body without first understanding its organs and their functions. A computer is composed of components in the same way that the body is composed of organs that together work to make the body or computer function. A basic computer has at least 8 basic components which include a computer case or tower, motherboard, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Power Supply Unit (PSU), Random Access Memory (RAM), hard drive (HDD), Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) and some type of optical drive which would be your CD/DVD drive. These 7 components are the backbone of every healthy, functioning computer.

Motherboards

Motherboards often referred to as a logic board, main board or “mobo” for short, are the “back-bone” of the computer. Its purpose is to connect all the parts of the computer together and make everything centralized using its printed circuit board. The central processing unit, hard drives, memory, graphic processing unit, printers, and other ports all connect to the computer directly or via special cables that attach on to the motherboard. When you plug in a USB or thumb drive to a computer you are actually plugging it directly into the computer!

Power Supply

True to its name, the power supply powers all other components of the machine. It usually plugs into the motherboard to power the other parts. The power supply connects to either an internal battery (on a laptop) or a plug for an outlet (on a desktop).

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

A CPU, sometimes referred to as a computer’s brain, is the workhorse of the machine. It performs the calculations needed by a system, and can vary in speed. The work that a CPU does generates heat, which is why your computer has a fan inside. A more powerful CPU is necessary for intense computer work like editing high-definition video or programming complex software.

Random-access Memory (RAM)

RAM is temporary memory. Whenever you open up a Microsoft Word window, your computer places it in RAM, and when you close the window, that RAM is freed. Since RAM is volatile, its contents are lost if the machine loses power. This is why you lose a Word document when the power goes out if you didn’t save it.

Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive

Since RAM is temporary, your computer needs a place to store data permanently. That’s where the hard drive comes in. The traditional hard drive consists of several spinning platters with an arm that physically writes data to the disk. However, these drives are slow and are starting to be replaced by the faster solid-state drives.

Video Card

A video card is a dedicated unit for handling the output of images to a display. Video cards have their own dedicated RAM for performing these functions. A high-end video card is required to process extremely intense visual functions, such as computer drafting by engineers. Like many components, many types of video cards are available with varying power and prices.

Optical Drives

Though less common than they used to be, many machines still have an optical drive for reading CDs and DVDs. These can be used to listen to music or watch movies, place information onto a blank disc, or install software from a disc. Since most software nowadays is installed from the internet instead of using discs, these aren’t as important as they once were, especially on laptops.

Input and Output Devices

Depending on your particular computer, you can connect a variety of devices to send information into it or out of it. Common input devices include mice (touchpads on laptops), keyboards, and webcams, while output devices consist of monitors, printers, and speakers. Removable media such as flash drives and SD cards can also be used to transfer data between computers.

HOW AN OPTICAL MOUSE WORKS?

An optical mouse is technologically much more advanced than a mechanical mouse. Unlike the latter, an optical mouse is completely electronic and therefore has no moving parts. It consists of an LED (that generates the signature red light), a light-detector chip, a switch mechanism and a few other simple components. Some mice have another LED that lights up a plastic strip installed at the back of the mouse as an indication of the mouse’s operation.

The LED installed at the bottom of the mouse emits a bright light in the downward direction. Since a mouse is usually used on plain surfaces, the light bounces back from the surface and enters a photocell that’s also mounted on the bottom, almost next to the LED. This photocell has a frontal lens that magnifies any light reaching it. As you move the mouse around, the pattern of the reflected beam changes; this is then used by the light-detector chip to figure out how and in which direction you’re moving the mouse.

Some optical mice have two LEDs. The first one shines light down onto the desk. The light from that is picked up by the photocell. The second LED lights up a red plastic strip along the back of the mouse so you can see it’s working. Most optical mice also have a wheel at the front so you can scroll pages on-screen much faster. You can click the wheel too, so it functions like the third (center) button on a conventional ball mouse.

Optical mice are much lighter and faster than mechanical ones, and have therefore gained enormous popularity all over the world. With improvements in technology, newer and even more advanced mice – that address issues like ergonomics and the health of the user – are taking center stage. The choice of the right variant rests with the user, but one thing remains universally true – computers and mice shall always remain inseparable.

HOW DOES A MOUSE WORK?

A Mouse is a device for giving the computer information (an input device). When the mouse is pushed around on a mat, a pointer on the computer’s screen is moved, indicating how data needs to be changed, moved or processed. Tiny beams of light inside the mouse shine through slotted wheels. The ball of the mouse moves as it is pushed across the mat, and the beams of light are interrupted in a way that tells the computer the direction that the mouse is moving.

A mouse is something you push along your desktop to make a cursor (pointing device) move on your screen. So what a mouse has to do is figure out how much you’re moving your hand and in which direction. There are two main kinds of mice and they do this job in two different ways, either using a rolling rubber ball (in a ball-type mouse) or by bouncing a light off your desk (in an optical mouse).

How does a mouse like this actually work? As you move it across your desk, the ball rolls under its own weight and pushes against two plastic rollers linked to thin wheels. One of the wheels detects movements in an up-and-down direction (like the y-axis on graph/chart paper); the other detects side-to-side movements (like the x-axis on graph paper).

How do the wheels measure your hand movements? As you move the mouse, the ball moves the rollers that turn one or both of the wheels. If you move the mouse straight up, only the y-axis wheel turns; if you move to the right, only the x-axis wheel turns. And if you move the mouse at an angle, the ball turns both wheels at once. Now here’s the clever bit. Each wheel is made up of plastic spokes and, as it turns, the spokes repeatedly break a light beam. The more the wheel turns, the more times the beam is broken. So counting the number of times the beam is broken is a way of precisely measuring how far the wheel has turned and how far you’ve pushed the mouse. The counting and measuring is done by the microchip inside the mouse, which sends details down the cable to your computer. Software in your computer moves the cursor on your screen by a corresponding amount.

There are various problems with mice like this. They don’t work on all surfaces. Ideally, you need a special mouse mat but, even if you have one, the rubber ball and its rollers gradually pick up dirt, so the x- and y-axis wheels turn erratically and make the pointer stutter across your screen. One solution is to keep taking your mouse to pieces and cleaning it; another option is to get yourself an optical mouse.

Traditional mice have a rubber ball inside them. Open one up and you can see the heavy ball clearly and the spring that keeps it in position.

HOW IS INFORMATION STORED IN A COMPUTER?

Inside a computer is a “hard disk”, which is able to store information (data) even when the machine is turned off. There are also two other kinds of storage in a computer. ROM (read-only memory) stores the instructions that tell the computer how to start working when it is first switched on. RAM (random-access memory) stores data that is in use. To make sure that data is permanently stored, it must be “saved” on the hard disk before the computer is switched off.

At the core of the computer is the central processing unit or CPU, the source of control that runs all programs and instructions. In order to function, computers use two types of memory: primary and secondary. The main storage is the primary memory, and data and programs are stored in secondary memory.

Data is stored as lots of binary numbers, by magnetism, electronics or optics. … The computer’s operating system, for example, contains instructions for organizing data into files and folders, managing temporary data storage, and sending data to application programs and devices such as printers.

Magnetic storage is commonly used on the hard disc drives found on most computers. Information is stored using positive and negative magnetic charges to correspond with the 1s and 0s noted above. Optical discs like CDs and DVDs store information as binary code that can be read by an optical sensor in a disc drive.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE?

The hardware of a computer consists of all the parts you can hold in your hand: the machine itself and any other machinery that is attached to it. But a computer by itself is simply a collection of components. In order to do anything at all, it must be programmed (given a set of instructions). Programs are what are known as software. They are written in a code that a computer can “understand” and act upon. The codes in which programs are written are sometimes called languages.

Computer hardware is any physical device used in or with your machine, whereas software is a collection of programming code installed on your computer’s hard drive. In other words, hardware is something you can hold in your hand, whereas software cannot be held in your hand. You can touch hardware, but you cannot touch software. Hardware is physical, and software is virtual.

For example, the computer monitor you are using to read this text, and the mouse you are using to navigate this web page are computer hardware. The Internet browser allowing you to view this page, and the operating system that the browser is running on are considered software. A video card is hardware, and a computer game is software. You can touch and feel the video card, and the computer uses it to play a computer game, but you cannot touch or feel the programming code that makes up the computer game.

All software utilizes at least one hardware device to operate. For example, a video game, which is software, uses the computer processor (CPU), memory (RAM), hard drive, and video card to run. Word processing software uses the computer processor, memory, and hard drive to create and save documents.

Hardware is what makes a computer work. A CPU processes information and that information can be stored in RAM or on a hard drive. A sound card provides sound to speakers, and a video card provides an image to a monitor. Each of these are examples of hardware components.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PARTS OF A COMPUTER?

The central processing unit (CPU) is the “brain” of a computer, where its calculations take place. It is contained within a larger processing unit. In order to give instructions to the computer, input devices, such as a keyboard, stylus, mouse, or joystick, are needed. The monitor enables the user to see data on a screen. Many other machines, called peripherals, can also be connected to the computer. They include printers, scanners and modems.

The Central Processing Unit

The central processing unit, or CPU, can be thought of as the “brain” of a computer. Using a combination of arithmetic functions, logic processes and input/output commands, the CPU receives instructions from various computer programs in use and executes them as needed. The modern CPU exists in the form of a microprocessor, which features a single integrated circuit design. This is a dramatic departure from the earliest CPU units, which featured a transistor-based construction. Compared to the CPUs used in the second half of the 20th century, modern hardware is highly efficient, portable and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

The Motherboard

A CPU can’t achieve its intended purpose without the assistance of the motherboard. The motherboard is a printed circuit board, or PCB, found inside a computer which not only hosts the CPU but also acts as a connected gateway to various other computer peripherals, including sound cards, hard drives, video cards and so on. The motherboard hosts a number of sockets into which microprocessors, such as the CPU, can be plugged. The motherboard is also connected to the computer’s power supply and distributes electrical voltage to the attached components. Simply put, a motherboard provides a critical platform on which the rest of a CPU’s hardware can operate. Without the motherboard in place, a computer couldn’t function.

Hard Drives and RAM

The hard drive often shortened to HD, stores data which can then be accessed by various other programs at any given time. Hard drives provide users with various levels of storage capacity, with more expensive units often providing greater space for data storage and faster rates of data transmission.

It’s somewhat easy to confuse the function of the hard drive with that of random access memory, or RAM. Unlike a hard drive, RAM is composed of a series of chips which allow for temporary data storage only. Whereas a hard drive will continue to store data even after a computer has been powered off, RAM will be cleared. RAM is often used to act as a holding zone for open files or critical data that a program may need to access intermittently during use. RAM should not be thought of as storage, per say, but instead as a “place holder” for valuable information. Nevertheless, it remains one of the 4 main parts of a computer that is still in use today.

Monitor

The monitor works with a video card, located inside the computer case, to display images and text on the screen. Most monitors have control buttons that allow you to change your monitor’s display settings, and some monitors also have built-in speakers.

Keyboard

The keyboard is one of the main ways to communicate with a computer. There are many different types of keyboards, but most are very similar and allow you to accomplish the same basic tasks.

Mouse

The mouse is another important tool for communicating with computers. Commonly known as a pointing device, it lets you point to objects on the screen, click on them, and move them. There are two main mouse types: optical and mechanical. The optical mouse uses an electronic eye to detect movement and is easier to clean. The mechanical mouse uses a rolling ball to detect movement and requires regular cleaning to work properly.

WHO BUILT THE FIRST COMPUTER?

In the early 1830s, an English inventor called Charles Babbage (1792-1871) designed the first programmable computer and began to build it. In fact, he never finished, as the machine was extremely complicated! This computer was entirely mechanical. Over a hundred years had to pass before the electronic components that are used today were invented.

We could argue that the first computer was the abacus or its descendant, the slide rule, invented by William Oughtred in 1622. But the first computer resembling today’s modern machines was the Analytical Engine, a device conceived and designed by British mathematician Charles Babbage between 1833 and 1871. Before Babbage came along, a “computer” was a person, someone who literally sat around all day, adding and subtracting numbers and entering the results into tables. The tables then appeared in books, so other people could use them to complete tasks, such as launching artillery shells accurately or calculating taxes.

It was, in fact, a mammoth number-crunching project that inspired Babbage in the first place [source: Campbell-Kelly]. Napoleon Bonaparte initiated the project in 1790, when he ordered a switch from the old imperial system of measurements to the new metric system. For 10 years, scores of human computers made the necessary conversions and completed the tables. Bonaparte was never able to publish the tables, however, and they sat collecting dust in the Academia des sciences in Paris.

In 1819, Babbage visited the City of Light and viewed the unpublished manuscript with page after page of tables. If only, he wondered, there was a way to produce such tables faster, with less manpower and fewer mistakes. He thought of the many marvels generated by the Industrial Revolution. If creative and hardworking inventors could develop the cotton gin and the steam locomotive, then why not a machine to make calculations [source: Campbell-Kelly]?

Babbage returned to England and decided to build just such a machine. His first vision was something he dubbed the Difference Engine, which worked on the principle of finite differences, or making complex mathematical calculations by repeated addition without using multiplication or division. He secured government funding in 1824 and spent eight years perfecting his idea. In 1832, he produced a functioning prototype of his table-making machine, only to find his funding had run out.

What is a computer led crash?

The use of computers by some stock market investors has created a procedure called stop loss selling which could threaten the stability of national and even world markets.

The owners of securities instruct brokers to program their computers with a price for each security. If the securities fall below that price, they are sold to cut the owners losses.

Even on the most automated exchanges, the process is not yet entirely automatic; the broker still has to speak to the market maker to carry out a major trades. But as computer to computer systems emerge, the financial world could face a computer led crash. A slight downturn in the stock market would trigger off a few stop loss sales, causing a further downturn, which would then set off others, and so on.

The domino effect is no different from what has happened in all stock market crashes, as people sell to preserve some of their money. But computers could make it happen faster- almost literally – overnight making it more difficult to control and sending the crash to greater depths.

What are Binary numbers?

Because we have eight fingers and two thumbs, it seems natural for human beings to count in tens. It is just as natural for a computer to count in twos, for it has to decide between ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for every step in a process.

In everyday numbers, the digits from 0 to 9 are read from left to right and are based on the power of ten. For example, 110 is one hundred, ne ten, and no units.

The binary system uses only two digits: 0 and 1. Numbers are read from right to left and are based on the power of two. Moving from the right, each digit doubles in value, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and so on. 

Words fed into a computer are stored as binary numbers. If text such as LOAD”FILE in BASIC, computer language is keyed in, the word LOAD could be processed.

What are the four ways to send large files?

There’s always a need for some form of extra storage to transfer or send large files to our friends. While there are several external storage devices available in the market, one might not get an opportunity to meet a friend to hand these over in person. But, worry not. There are ways to send large files almost instantly using the Internet. We list four of them here:

VPN

Short for Virtual Private Network, VPN is an encrypted connection on the Internet from a device to a network. It helps ensure that data is transmitted safely and securely. It is also prevents unauthorized people from prying into your data.

Some Internet Service Providers use broadband traffic management to monitor users’ upload bandwidth. Using a VPN will block them from knowing how large your files are, enabling you to send them over the Internet.

File compression

This is a well-known method to send large files, either over the Internet or using external storage devices.

Use file compression software available online to compress the files into one big file. 7-Zip is popular file compression software available online that lets you compress different files into one.

Most files compression software will compress files into .zip format. Most operating systems have the capability to open .zip files. However, there are different types of software online that also let you open .zip files.

Free nine services

Over the years, several free online services have been launched that allow you to send large files securely over the Internet.

You can register with them and start sending files. However, most will allow you to send only a certain size of file in a month for free. You would mostly have to pay extra if you regularly send files over the free-size restriction.

Jumpshare, Dropbox, Securely Send and WeTransfer are some of the popular online services that are available. Some of these can also be downloaded to the computer and used when connected to Internet.

Cloud storage

One of the easiest and most popular methods to store and send large files is using cloud storage. Most of the popular email service providers such as Gmail and Outlook after cloud services.

You can upload all the files you want in a folder in Google Drive or OneDrive and share the link to the folder with your friend.

Alternatively, you can also send this folder as an attachment in your email. The folder and the files will remain in your drive until you delete them. And as long as your friend has the link, he too can see it and download the files.

What is a software update and why it is necessary?

Many times while using the computer, you can see a pop-up asking you to update particular software. While some of us choose to ignore it, a software update is necessary for the computer.

The need for a software update

A software update, also known as a software patch, is a set of changes to a computer program or its supporting codes, designed to fix, improve or update it.

An update is usually a free download for an application, operating system, and a software suite.

Usually, a software update offers fixes for features that are not working properly (bugs) or to ass minor enhancements and compatibility to the software. Sometimes they are released to address security issues, to improve the operation of hardware, and support new models of equipment.

A software update is not just limited to the computer. Any technology that uses software, such as a smart speaker or a smartwatch, requires a software update from time to time to keep it functioning in optional condition.

We might know PowerPoint as software from Microsoft. But unlike Word and Excel, PowerPoint was not developed for Microsoft. The presentation program was created by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin at a software company named Forethought, Inc.

Not just for presentations

While PowerPoint is primarily presentation software, one can also use it to make infographics, GIFs, quizzes, photo albums and more!

Designed for MAC

WHEN Gaskins was working on PowerPoint, he designed it for the Macintosh OS (macOS). PowerPoint was released for MAC on April 20, 1987. Just three months after its release, the product was acquired by Microsoft from Forethought, Inc for $14 million.

What are the fun facts about MS Word?

Not always called Word

MS Word was released on October 25, 1983 under the name Multi-Tool Word. However, the marketing department of the company thought the name was too long, so they shortened it to its current name, Word.

Check that spelling?

Word helps thousands today by prompting spelling and grammatical errors. However, the AutoCorrect feature and the red squiggly line you see under misspelt words were introduced with Word 95 in the year 1933.

Before that users had to check their spelling and grammar on their own.

Say ‘Hello’ to Clippy!

With the version of Word 97, Microsoft introduced Clippy, an animated interactive paperclip. Clippy was a word assistant which would assist users with formatting word documents. However, Clippy is said to be despised by many users, as it would distract them. Microsoft finally pulled Clippy out of service with the release of Word 2007.

Not the first word processor

Word is popular around the world, but it wasn’t the first word processor to have been developed. That credit goes to Bravo. In 1981, Microsoft hired Charles Simonyi, the primary developer of Bravo. It was Simpnyi who developed MS Word along with others.

Games for features

While Clippy made its exit with Word 2007, Microsoft introduced the ‘Ribbon’ feature in this version. It was a change in the user-interface for most users. However, to ease the process, Microsoft developed Ribbon Hero, a video game to educate users about the features of MS Word.

What are silicon chips?

A silicon chip is a tiny wafer of silicon (a semiconductor) on which a complete electronic device can be produced. An image is produced photographically and etched onto the chip, but it differs from a printed circuit in some important ways. More importantly, part of the process allows other devices to be produced in the manufacturing process, such as tiny resistors and capacitors. How does radar work?

Radar works by sending out a beam of high- frequency radio waves, which are reflected back when they strike a solid object. The radio waves can also be reflected by clouds or other weather features. The reflected waves are collected and used to produce an image. Usually the radar beam is emitted from a rotating scanner, so a complete 360° image is produced. Radar is important in the navigation of ships, aircraft, and weather forecasting.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

               When we speak of intelligence we refer to the natural intelligence of people which means their inherent mental ability. But artificial intelligence is the intelligence of machines that can think like human minds. Of late, scientists have developed computers which can perform tasks that require intelligence. The successful performance of such tasks which need some thinking and analysis has again generated the old debate whether machine is superior to man or vice versa?

               Nowadays machines can easily recognize and read printed words. Autopilots, which are computerized machines, can fly aircrafts. These intelligent machines can also recognize and respond to sound and voice and also learn to rectify the mistakes committed. Even computers can play chess so brilliantly that they sometimes outwit the human beings. The whole world was stunned when an IBM computer defeated the world champion Gary Kasparov in a game of chess. But does this mean that artificial intelligence is superior to the natural intelligence of man?

               A computer carries out a series of operations as per the programs developed by computer programmers. This means that the human intelligence works behind the artificial intelligence of machines. Artificial intelligence has its limitations as it depends on the amount of stored information in it to make a decision whereas the natural intelligence is not handicapped by any such limitations.

               Now research is underway to create sound links with computers so as to enable them to recognize human speech and thus receive the feedback orally rather than inserting the instructions through the keyboard. This development of direct interaction with machines or computers would be another milestone in the field of artificial intelligence.

               Now artificial intelligence research covers the areas of planning, language understanding, and pattern recognition and knowledge representation. But whether it can ever surpass the natural intelligence of man, only the future can say.

          Most scientists define intelligence as the ability to learn, understand and analyze things, accompanied by a good memory and imagination. This implies that intelligence is a mixture of several abilities. We know that intelligence level differs from person to person depending upon the aforesaid traits. Till today neither the above definition of intelligence has been universally accepted nor do the various tests to measure it have a common appeal. In spite of the difficulties, there is one way widely used to measure intelligence — the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test. But what is IQ?

          ‘IQ’ is the abbreviation of a psychological phenomenon called ‘Intelligence Quotient’. It is expressed in a number. The IQ of an individual is obtained by dividing his mental age (it is determined by the performance on a standardized intelligence test) by his chronological age and multiplying the result by 100.

          The mental age of an individual is determined with the help of different tests. Persons are classified under different categories depending on their IQ scores. 

          At one time, many psychologists believed that everyone had some degree of inborn intelligence. It was also believed that intelligence was a natural trait like blue eyes, sharp nose etc. and could be ascertained in a single test. But a French psychologist, Alfred Binet, exploded this myth. He worked over this problem in an attempt to develop a test that would help to distinguish between intelligent and dull children. His first tests were given to some French school children in 1905. Later in 1915, these tests were adopted by the German psychologist William Stern and US psychologist Lewis Terman.

          Many psychologists believe that these intelligence tests are not the true indicators of one’s intelligence level and therefore do not give a complete picture of the factors that make up intelligence. For example, some tests measure what one has learnt but not how quickly he has learnt. We know that the grasping power of different people is different. They differ in their ability to understand and remember ideas.

          They also differ in the use of their knowledge and earlier experiences to solve problems. Hence till today there is no fully accepted definition of intelligence.

          It has been, however, concluded that intelligence mainly depends on heredity and the environment. Every person is born with a certain mental ability. The development of that ability may be activated or slowed down by his or her background. The socialization process which includes the environment plays a major role in shaping one’s intelligence. A child becomes a quick learner in areas which he experiences and observes in his day-to-day life. A child who is constantly ridiculed or beaten may develop a complex due to which he or she may not be able to develop his or her intellectual abilities fully. Many children who face discrimination because of race or physical defects fail to develop their mental abilities well. From these facts, it is clear that intelligence is not a natural trait like blue eyes. There is not a single trait that can be called intelligence, nor any single factor which determines it.

Later in 1915, these tests were adopted by the German psychologist William Stern and US psychologist Lewis Terman.

          Many psychologists believe that these intelligence tests are not the true indicators of one’s intelligence level and therefore do not give a complete picture of the factors that make up intelligence. For example, some tests measure what one has learnt but not how quickly he has learnt. We know that the grasping power of different people is different. They differ in their ability to understand and remember ideas.

          They also differ in the use of their knowledge and earlier experiences to solve problems. Hence till today there is no fully accepted definition of intelligence.

          It has been, however, concluded that intelligence mainly depends on heredity and the environment. Every person is born with a certain mental ability. The development of that ability may be activated or slowed down by his or her background. The socialization process which includes the environment plays a major role in shaping one’s intelligence. A child becomes a quick learner in areas which he experiences and observes in his day-to-day life. A child who is constantly ridiculed or beaten may develop a complex due to which he or she may not be able to develop his or her intellectual abilities fully. Many children who face discrimination because of race or physical defects fail to develop their mental abilities well. From these facts, it is clear that intelligence is not a natural trait like blue eyes. There is not a single trait that can be called intelligence, nor any single factor which determines it.

      The introduction of Wikipedia has been a major step towards making information accessible to all. It was founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger on January 15th, 2001.

       Owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia is perhaps the largest, and undoubtedly the most popular, reference work online. The content of the site has been used in academic books, researches, and even court cases.

       It was Larry Sanger who coined the name by mixing ‘wiki’ and ‘encyclopedia’. One of the important features of the site is that it can be edited by anyone. The slogan of the company reads, “The free encyclopedia that anyone can edit”.

       At first, there was only the English version of the Wikipedia, but soon other language versions too came up, making it easier for non-English users. In total, there are over 40 million wiki articles in 295 languages including Swedish, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, and Polish.

       However, it is the English Wikipedia that still remains the reader’s favourite, having nearly 18 million page views every month as of February 2014. It also has to its credit, a total of 5,325,006 articles.

 

What Is Live-Journal?

        Live-Journal is an online social network created by Brad Fitzpatrick on April 15th, 1999 in San Francisco. It affords users a platform for self expression through blogs, journals, or diaries, and an environment to connect with others.

        Similar to a blog, each account on Live-Journal has a home page, exhibiting the user’s entries and comments they have received. Privacy it ensured in such a way that the users get to edit their friend list and set viewer restrictions. This way, Live-Journal acts more or less like a diary.

        There are free, as well as paid accounts on Live-Journal. Paid members earn the advantage of sending text messages, voice notes, and extra storage, as well as an access to the ‘Express Lane’, making the Live-Journal experience more effective.

        Fitzpatrick started it off as an online community to stay in touch with his schoolmates, and keeping them updated. Soon the venture was established commercially, and the company was named Danga Interactive. It turned out so successful that by 2012, there were over 10 million people across the globe using Live-Journal. At present, Live-Journal is partnered with an online newspaper (Gazeta.ru) in Russia.

 

Why is it said that the introduction of Microsoft is a turning point in history of IT?

     The role of Microsoft in the growth of IT is unparalleled. Perhaps the biggest change it caused was making computer technology accessible to people across the world.

     The history of Microsoft began when Bill Gates and Paul Allen developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the MITS Altair 8800, the first microcomputer. This happened in 1975.

     Bill Gates was still a student at Harvard. He then discontinued his studies, and started working on ‘Micro-Soft’.

     The company was established on April 4th, 1975. The hyphen was later removed, and the trade name ‘Microsoft’ was registered officially in 1976. In the same year, Microsoft became independent from MITS, and focused on developing programming languages.

     Microsoft then worked with technology giant IBM for a brief period and in 1981 they introduced the operating system called MS DOS. This made Microsoft a major player in the industry.

     The years that followed witnessed other significant projects from the company. Some of them are – the Windows, a graphical operating systems collective, Office XP, a popular business software suite, Xbox 360, which provided it complete entertainment experience, Surface 3 tablets etc.

     In September 2016, Microsoft announced the formation of the Artificial Intelligence (Al) and Research Group.

 

When was the film invented?

The film as the storage option for images was invented at the beginning of the 19th century. The researchers at that time were experimenting with toxic chemicals to store light reflected from the objects on a long-term basis. The Frenchman, Louis Daguerre, finally succeeded in 1837 to fix the images on a light-sensitive material in a salt bath. This was the first film. However, the exposure times were very long. People had to sit for a long time while the photographer captured their image on a photographic plate. The path to the film roll was paved in 1889 by the American George Eastman – a thin layer of silver salts was applied on flexible plastic celluloid. Digital cameras do not need this because they store everything on a computer chip. 

Where is a simulation program used?

Simulation programs are used for training in areas where the possibility of something going wrong is very dangerous. For instance, a trainee pilot does not fly an aircraft just after training. Before that he practices at a simulator, which behaves like an aircraft, but is on the ground so it does not crash if le pilot makes a mistake. We can also simulate a fault in a power plant or a tsunami. Trainees must demonstrate that they can handle he crisis effectively.

 

How does a CD-ROM work?

A CD-ROM is a plastic disc with a thin aluminium layer from which music, texts, and other data can be retrieved. Like everything else in the world of computers, these files are also stored in the numeric sequence of 1 and 0. In this case, there are tiny grooves for 1 or none for 0. A laser beam in the reader scans these grooves, which reflect the laser beam in different ways. From these laser reflections, the chip in the computer or in the CD player deciphers the data present on the CD, which could be music, text, photos, or complete programs. 

How do robots explore volcanoes?

In 1994, a climbing robot by the name of Dante II was sent for the first time to explore the interior of a volcanic crater in Alaska. After entry into the crater, the measuring devices and cameras, hidden in the legs of the robot, started exploring the dangerous terrain. By analyzing the data and the images received from the surroundings, an onboard computer calculated each step of the robot. It was able to overcome boulders as high as 1 m and descended 70 m deep in the volcano before crashing. Fortunately, it had sent all the data collected and the images to the research station via satellite before it crashed.

Where are computers used today?

Today, small computer chips that give instructions via electrical impulses are present in almost all the devices such as cars, televisions, coffee machines, and mobile phones that we use daily. They also control the robots that explore inaccessible areas such as volcanoes. Even on the distant planet of Mars, the exploration vehicle ‘Sojourner’ could be controlled with the help of computers. Nanorobots help doctors in fighting diseases. Without computer chips there would be no CD-ROMs or simulation programs, which are frequently used for training and research purposes.

The safest way to stop viruses entering your computer is not to open attachments from unknown senders, especially the ones with an unusual ‘subject’.

How can the blind work with computers?

For reading on-screen texts the blind need a special reading line in Braille script. For this, the computer converts the text in electrical signals, which are then pressed upwards by the corresponding points in the reading line. The blind can then feel the Braille. Or the text can be read aloud to them by a special speech program – they can also dictate texts in the same way. In this way, the visually challenged can also surf on the Internet. Pictures must always be accompanied by text; otherwise the blind cannot ‘read’ them.

 

What is the difference between the Internet and the ‘WWW’?

         In 1969, some American universities and research institutes needed more computing power, and connected their computers with one another. Later, more and more computers got connected, giving rise to a worldwide network called the Internet. On the other hand, the ‘WWW’ – and the sending of e-mails – is a service, which is offered within the Internet. It is a worldwide association of information pages connected with one another called the ‘World Wide Web’. The basic requirement for searching in the WWW or for sending e-mails is access to the Internet, maybe through a telephone line. Surfing, i.e., searching for information, in the WWW is not possible without a special program called a browser which understands the language of the Web. How does the mouse work?

              The working of a mouse can best be explained with the help of the first mechanical mouse units. They had a trackball in the running surface, which registered the movements of the hand in three directions: vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. The mouse converted the movements in electrical signals and sent them to the computer. The mouse units often got dirty because the trackballs gather a lot of dust. To solve this problem, the optical mouse was developed, which registers movements with light barriers. These were followed by the first wireless mouse units.

How does a computer calculate?

The heart of computers is the ‘CPU’, the central processing unit. It controls all the processes in the computer. Everything that happens is broken down in simple datasets. Computers know only two switching states, which are expressed by numbers: 1 stands for ‘power on’, 0 for ‘power off’. All the data stored in the computer is encoded with different combinations of both these digits, the binary code – ‘binary’ means ‘two’. For instance, when we press ‘a’ on the computer, it is then converted into the number sequence 1100001: The last position stands for 1, the second last for 2, the third for 4, followed by 8, 16, 32, 64, and so on. The positions occupied by ‘1’ are counted, for the number sequence for ‘a’, it will be 1+32+64= 97. The code for ‘a’ is, therefore, 97. All data can be coded in this way – computers, therefore, actually calculate only with ‘1’ and ‘0’.

When were computers used first?

The word ‘computer’ comes from the phrase ‘to compute’, or ‘to calculate’. Tools that help calculations, such as the abacus, have been around for the past 3000 years, but electronic computers that can perform complicated tasks at lightning speed appeared only about 70 year ago. Today, the world can no longer be imagined without computers. We enter commands with the help of keyboards and don’t stop to wonder at phrases like ‘open a window’ with the ‘mouse’. How are e-mails transmitted?

We need access to the Internet to send an e-mail. We can get the access by paying money to an internet service provider. In addition, one needs the email address of the receiver. The e-mail starts its journey when ‘Send’ is pressed from the sender’s email account. The e-mail then goes to the service provider, who sends from one ‘node’ to another, before it reaches its destination. It may happen that an e-mail sent from Berlin, goes to USA, then to India, and finally reaches your neighbour.

 

What is Software?

Computer software is a set of instructions called programs which are fed into a computer to enable it to perform certain specific tasks. Some of these programs called applications, or user software, are written in any of the different computer languages, such as C, PASCAL, FORTRAN or BASIC. These programs can be of any size. Student programs for small numerical problems may consist of only 5 to 20 statements, whereas the accounting and management information programs that are used by large corporation or governments may have thousand of statements.

Different from this class of software is the system software which includes programs that translate user programs into machine language programs and then load these translated programs into main memory prior to execution. System software also includes the set of certain routines required to manage the operation of the physical resources such as the central processing unit, mass storage and input-output devices.

Ready-to-use software that is floppy disks with different programs are available today. On loading these programs in a computer, instructions for using that program appear on the screen and can be used straight away.

 

What is Computer virus?

A computer virus is a self-replicating computer program or a segment of code that inserts copies of itself into other programs, thus infecting them. As a result, the original programs cannot run smoothly, thereby totally disrupting the functioning of the computer.

When an infected program is run on a computer, the hidden virus is activated and attempts to inject itself into additional programs. This process is analogous to the biological process of virus spreading from cell-to-cell within an organism. Very much like the biological virus, a single computer virus can spread to any number of compatible computer systems if provided with a pathway for infection.

The virus infects a system through sharing of infected diskette or through communication links, like local area networks or programs transmitted from distant systems.

Some of the commonly destructive manifestations of a computer virus include erasure of recorded data, rendering of entire device drives unreadable, interfering with communication and breaking the security cordon of the host computer. The virus may also create other problems such as display of unusual messages or plotting the text backward. Some of the well-known viruses are Pakistani Brain, Lehigh, Friday the 13th, Christmas and Bloody.

What is CAD/CAM?

CAD and CAM are abbreviations for ‘Computer Aided Design’ and ‘Computer Aided Manufacture’ respectively. Both are basically computer programs — sets of instructions —used to create drawings or to assist in manufacture of goods. Through a CAD program rough sketches are initially made on a computer screen by using a light pen or a mouse, which can further be finalized in exact details. The final drawings can thereafter be stored in computer memory in entirety or in parts for future use. Alterations or updating can subsequently be easily made in the final drawings. CAD programs are sometimes made for specific purposes such as designing printed circuit boards and computer chips. A CAM program, on the other hand, is used in the manufacture of goods in industries. For instance, computer-driven lathes, drills, welding machine or robotically operated production lines can be employed in factories to speedily manufacture a wide range of precision produced goods.

 

What is Computer mouse?

Computer mouse is a device for manipulating figures on a computer screen without using a keyboard. It is an input mechanism that bears some resemblance to the animal. Computer operations often involve creating, selecting, or manipulating items on a screen. A computer mouse can perform these tasks by pointing or taking the cursor to the desired place, on the screen.

It is a hand operated pointing device that senses movements as it is dragged across a flat surface and conveys this information to the computer. In this way images, and text can be moved around on the screen, or a particular operation selected from a menu. A mouse usually has one or three buttons that are clicked when the user wants to register the cursors current position.

What is DTP?

DTP or Desk-top Publishing is a method of designing, editing and laying out a publication electronically using a personal computer and word processing, graphics and page layout software. This term, DTP, was first coined by Paul Brainerd, a British pioneer in this field.

In a DTP process, whatever be, the matter or layout of a page, it is composed electronically and stored in the computer with the help of a page making software. Corrections of any type or changes can be easily done any number of times on the computer and the desired output is then obtained from a laser printer on paper. The camera ready text matter is then converted into photographic film (negative or positive) from which plates are made for printing. In newspaper publishing, it provides for incorporation of text, as it arrives by e-mail, directly into the pages being prepared. DTP is a versatile technology for applications in the advertising, designing and publishing business.

 

What is E-mail?

E-mail is the short form for electronic mail, which is based on the use of computers for the transmission of messages rather than through the postal system. The e-mail system connects a network of personal computers (PC) spread over hundreds of locations within a country or across the globe. A PC is set-up as a message server in the system. The users at other PCs can link up with the server at any time to receive and transmit messages.

Each user of the e-mail system is allotted a code number or address in the e-mail directory. To send a message, a user has to “key-in” the message in his PC along-with the directory numbers allotted to him and the receiver of the message. The sender can indicate if the message is confidential or universal and also set a time limit for its retention. The receiver, on receiving the message at his computer terminal, can get it printed on paper.

 The main advantages of e-mail are that it cuts down the delay involved in postal transmission of messages. Moreover, messages can be sent at any time of day or night which are stored and can be retrieved by the recipient at his or her convenience. Besides once the contact between the transmitter and receiver PCs is established e-mail requires only a few minutes time to transmit even a bulky message.
