WHICH CAREER SHOULD MY CHILD GO FOR?

My son is in grade 8. He is not sure what he wants to pursue after the Std 10. We need help to understand how we can guide him and resources we have to look at options. Please advise.

“Which career should your child go for?” There is no straight answer. The reason being that “Each child is unique, with unique set of abilities, potentials and skills.” The best career is when we match our preferences to the realities of a job.

Start by checking what your son is good at. His hobbies, the subject he likes most in school, his favourite books, magazines and TV programmes, what he does in his spare time these are all important clues to what kind of career would suit him best. His school results can also give some clues as to what his strong subjects are – is he better in theoretical work or practical work?

He still has two more years before deciding on subject streams. Depending on the subjects he takes, you can explore various career opportunities. You may also contact agencies that conduct aptitude tests.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I have PCM in Std 12 and I was thinking of joining the army through NDA or do B.Tech. which can help me in my interest in computer science. After that I want to start my own company. From which engineering college should I do my B.Tech, and should I study abroad or in India? I was also thinking of pursuing MBA if I choose B.Tech. Please guide me.

NDA, B.Tech., MBA, studying abroad, starting your venture… your interests seem to be quite wide. But it looks like you’re just fascinated by these words, and did not put any effort to know how to enter into these.

First, try to think what you want to do after say 7-8 years, then decide the path and the courses.

After NDA (National Defence Academy), you’ll be required to serve the country on short/ permanent commission. If you want to start your own company, you should go for some professional course.

IS THE ATMOSPHERE BUILT UP IN LAYERS?

Yes, the atmosphere has five layers. The lowest layer, closest to the surface of the Earth, is the troposphere. This is where weather is made, and most of the atmosphere’s gases are concentrated in it. Above it is the Stratosphere. No winds blow in this layer, nor are there any clouds. Beyond it lies the cold mesosphere, with very few gases. It is followed by the thermosphere, the thickest and hottest layer of the atmosphere, and lastly, the exosphere, on the edge of outer space.

Earth’s atmosphere is all around us. Most people take it for granted. Among other things, it shields us from radiation and prevents our precious water from evaporating into space. It keeps the planet warm and provides us with oxygen to breathe. In fact, the atmosphere makes Earth the livable, lovable home sweet home that it is.

The atmosphere extends from Earth’s surface to more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) above the planet. Those 10,000 kilometers are divided into five distinct layers. From the bottom layer to the top, the air in each has the same composition. But the higher up you go, the further apart those air molecules are.

Troposphere: Earth’s surface to between 8 and 14 kilometers (5 and 9 miles)

This lowest layer of the atmosphere starts at the ground and extends 14 kilometers (9 miles) up at the equator. That’s where it’s thickest. It’s thinnest above the poles, just 8 kilometers (5 miles) or so. The troposphere holds nearly all of Earth’s water vapor. It’s where most clouds ride the winds and where weather occurs. Water vapor and air constantly circulate in turbulent convection currents. Not surprisingly, the troposphere also is by far the densest layer. It contains as much as 80 percent of the mass of the whole atmosphere. The further up you go in this layer, the colder it gets.

Stratosphere: 14 to 64 km (9 to about 31 miles)

Unlike the troposphere, temperatures in this layer increase with elevation. The stratosphere is very dry, so clouds rarely form here. It also contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone, triplet molecules made from three oxygen atoms. At this elevation, ozone protects life on Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. It’s a very stable layer, with little circulation. For that reason, commercial airlines tend to fly in the lower stratosphere to keep flights smooth. This lack of vertical movement also explains why stuff that gets into in the stratosphere tends to stay there for a long time. That “stuff” might include aerosol particles shot skyward by volcanic eruptions, and even smoke from wildfires. This layer also has accumulated pollutants, such as chlorofluorocarbons. Better known as CFCs, these chemicals can destroy the protective ozone layer, thinning it greatly. By the top of the stratosphere, called the stratopause, air is only a thousandth as dense as at Earth’s surface.

Mesosphere: 64 to 85 km (31 to 53 miles)

Scientists don’t know quite as much about this layer. It’s just harder to study. Airplanes and research balloons don’t operate this high and satellites orbit higher up. We do know that the mesosphere is where most meteors harmlessly burn up as they hurtle towards Earth.

The mesopause is also known as the Karman line. It’s named for the Hungarian-born physicist Theodore von Kármán. He was looking to determine the lower edge of what might constitute outer space. He set it at about 80 kilometers (50 miles) up.

The ionosphere is a zone of charged particles that extends from the upper stratosphere or lower mesosphere all the way to the exosphere. The ionosphere is able to reflect radio waves; this allows radio communications.

Thermosphere: 85 to 600 km (53 to 372 miles)

The next layer up is the thermosphere. It soaks up x-rays and ultraviolet energy from the sun, protecting those of us on the ground from these harmful rays. The ups and downs of that solar energy also make the thermosphere vary wildly in temperature. It can go from really cold to as hot as about 1,980 ºC (3,600 ºF) near the top. The sun’s varying energy output also causes the thickness of this layer to expand as it heats and to contract as it cools. With all the charged particles, the thermosphere is also home to those beautiful celestial light shows known as auroras. This layer’s top boundary is called the thermopause.

Exosphere: 600 to 10,000 km (372 to 6,200 miles)

The uppermost layer of Earth’s atmosphere is called the exosphere. Its lower boundary is known as the exobase. The exosphere has no firmly defined top. Instead, it just fades further out into space. Air molecules in this part of our atmosphere are so far apart that they rarely even collide with each other. Earth’s gravity still has a little pull here, but just enough to keep most of the sparse air molecules from drifting away. Still, some of those air molecules — tiny bits of our atmosphere — do float away, lost to Earth forever.

What is Anthophobia ?

An irrational fear of flowers is called Anthophobia. The word is a combination of two Greek words namely anthos meaning ‘flowers’ and phobos meaning ‘fear or deep aversion’.

You have probably come across many types of phobias among human beings. Some are understandable while some might seem highly irrational or unbelievable like fear of birds, fear of work or fear of feet. But most phobias are legitimate and can affect a person’s life drastically. One of the types of phobia that exist today is Anthophobia, the fear of flowers.

Fear of flowers is not the same as the fear of plants or the fear of nature. The fear of plants is known as Botanophobia and the fear of nature is called Biophobia. So Anthophobia is only specific to flowers or flowering plants. The sufferer is not afraid of other plants and trees. Most Anthophobic people will tend to stay away from nature as much as possible as there is a chance encounter of flowers and flowering plants always in the back of their minds. They will be morbidly afraid of flowers and will react rather negatively. This type of fear is extremely rare and exists in only a few people around the world.

Anthophobia symptoms will vary from person to person depending upon the degree of trauma and susceptibility to anxiety under given circumstances. However, there are specific symptoms one can look out for, such as:

Panic Attacks – Having a drastic panic attack at the mere sight or thought of flowers could be one of the main symptoms.

Sweaty palms, racing heartbeats, rapid or accelerated breathing, trembling or shivering and so on are certain factors to look out for. It is important to note that the symptoms are stimulated even by thoughts and not just by vision. Irrational amount of fear – Having a fear of impending doom along with thoughts of death and powerlessness are some of the feelings one would experience when they are placed in a situation where they are around flowers. These emotional symptoms will be directly associated with Anthophobia in the individual.

Why is it difficult to cook rice or dal when you’re in a place that is at a higher altitude?

The lower the atmospheric pressure, the lower the boiling point of water. At the top of Mount Everest where the atmospheric pressure is less than one-third of what it is at sea level, water boils at around 70 degrees Celsius, whereas in a place like Mumbai, water boils at 100 degrees C

Rice and dal require this higher temperature to get cooked. So though the water may boil at the top of Everest, it will not be hot enough for the rice or dal to cook in it.

The problem can be overcome by using a pressure cooker. In a pressure cooker, due to the high pressure created inside it, water boils at much higher temperatures than normal and so food gets cooked faster.

Six environmental issues and how to solve them?

Earth has undergone many environmental changes in its history. But the current ones are being caused by one species: humans. Our activities contribute to global warming, climate change, extreme weather events, species extinction, resource depletion, and what not. Let’s take a closer look at six of them to mark Earth Day, observed on April 22.

1. POLLUTION

Since the industrial revolution, environmental pollution has been on the rise. Pollution is the introduction of harmful contaminants into the environment that negatively alters our surroundings. While pollution can take several forms, such as light and noise, the three major types are air, land, and water pollution. Humans contribute to each of these every day. Pollution affects biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health worldwide. Air pollution is attributed to 11.65% of deaths globally, for instance. Vehicular and industrial emission, and basically, our dependence on fossil fuel for energy, is the chief cause of air pollution. While water pollution comes from sewage, chemicals, agricultural runoffs, etc. land pollution is caused by indiscriminate dumping of garbage, toxic materials, and industrial waste. Not to mention the harm caused by plastic pollution to marine and terrestrial life. As economies and population grow, pollution too increases at an alarming rate globally.

 2.GLACIER MELT AND SEA-LEVEL RISE

Nineteen of the warmest years in the recorded history of the planet has occurred since 2000. Models predict that as the world consumes more fossil fuel, greenhouse gas concentrations will continue to rise, and Earth’s average surface temperature will rise with them. Average surface temperatures could rise between 2°C and 6°C by the end of the 21st Century. A warmer atmosphere causes glaciers and polar ice sheets to melt rapidly. Glacial melt has a direct impact on freshwater flow because glaciers store water in the form of ice during the colder seasons and release it during warmer seasons by way of melting. This serves as a water source for humans, animals, and vegetation. Glacier melt also contributes to unusual rise in sea level. The impact of sea-level rise includes flooding of coastal areas, increased soil erosion, disappearance of some low-lying islands, saltwater intrusion, and habitat destruction in coastal areas, which, in turn, can affect coastal ecosystems.

What can you do?

A few tips on how we can reduce our impact on global warming: 1. Urge your parents to switch to renewable sources such as solar to power your home.

2. Use energy-efficient appliances at home and school

3. Support local businesses that use and promote sustainable, climate-smart practices

3. DEFORESTATION

Deforestation is the destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. Earth loses 18.7 million acres of forests per year, which is equal to 27 football fields every minute, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Farmers clear forests to use the land for agriculture. Trees are cut for mining. for use as fuel. housing, and urbanisation, contruction of dams and infrastructual projects, and for making furniture. Deforestation is considered to be one of the contributing factors to global warming and climate change. Trees absorb not only the carbon dioxide that we exhale, but also the other heat-trapping greenhouse gases that human activities emit. With increase in deforestation, larger amounts of these gases will enter the atmosphere and global warming will increase further. As much as 70 % of the world’s plants and animals live in forests. They are losing their habitats due to deforestation. Loss of habitat can lead to species extinction.

What can you do?

1. Plant saplings

2. Go paperless

3. Go for used-furniture instead of buying new ones every time.

4.WATER CRISIS

If global temperatures continue to rise, rainfall will increasingly become a thing of extremes: long dry spells here. dangerous floods there and in some places, intense water shortages. This will also affect agriculture. Worldwide, farmers are struggling to keep up with shifting weather patterns and increasingly unpredictable water supplies. Extreme weather patterns also destroy life, property. and livelihood. The rapid increase in population and the massive growth in the industrial sector have increased the demand for water multifold. Overexploitation and wastage of water are major issues, especially in urban areas. A UN report says that at least two billion people live in countries with high water stress. That is more than a quarter of the world population. Ecosystems and biodiversity are threatened by the scarcity of water resources. Water crisis can also lead conflict between States that share water sources such as river.

What can you do?

1. Do not waste water

2. Fix leaking tap and try to reuse water wherever possible

3. Urge your parents to install rainwater harvesting facility

4. Don’t pollute water: Do not dump household solid waste or oil and chemicals into the drainage system. Do not litter. They are likely to end up in a waterbody.

5.WILDFIRE

As warmer temperatures increase evaporation, the land becomes drier and drier, enhancing the chances of wildfires. The intense, destructive fires that have dominated headlines in recent years are expected to become more frequent, even in places such as the Arctic. Extreme fires are projected to rise up to 14% by 2030 and 30% by mid-century, according to a new report by the UN Environment Programme.

Wildfires not only destroy forests and cause loss of life, they emit large amounts of greenhouse gases such as CO2, methane, and carbon monoxide. The smoke from burning vegetation can pose serious risks to respiratory health. Animals are directly impacted by wildfire. They lose their life or their home and food source.

What can you do?

1. Build your campfire in an open location and far from flammables

2. Do not contribute to global warming

3. Avoid burning wastes around dry grass.

6. WILDLIFE TRADE

Wildlife trade is a big business, run by international networks. Animals and birds are trafficked across the globe for meat, skin, bone, fur, and other body parts. In addition, many species are sold as pets. Experts at TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, estimate that the illegal wildlife commerce runs into billions of dollars. Wildlife trafficking threatens the survival of some of the Earth’s most iconic species: tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, pangolin, etc. It affects food chain and threatens the local ecosystem. Wildlife trade also increases the chances of human-animal contact, putting humans at the risk of contracting diseases. COVID-19 was linked to wildlife trade and eating of wildlife. People who handled, killed, and sold wild animals made up nearly 40 % of the first cases of SARS. Poorly regulated wet markets and illegal wildlife trade offer a unique opportunity for viruses to spill over from wildlife hosts into the human population.

What can you do?

1. Create awareness among the public about wildlife trade.

2. Say no to exotic pets. They may have been trafficked and kept in unsafe conditions before being sold.

3. Avoid buying things made from ivory, horns, and leather. This discourages illegal trading.
